Sensitive Teeth – Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Dentin hypersensitivity – also known as tooth sensitivity – is a common clinical condition usually associated with exposed dental surfaces. A common cause of tooth sensitivity is tooth decay, which can occur due to poor oral hygiene. Regular brushing, flossing, and visits to your dentist can prevent tooth decay.

Symptoms

  • Sensitivity during flossing or brushing teeth
  • Discomfort when teeth are exposed to hot or cold temperatures
  • Discomfort when teeth are exposed to acidic food and beverages

Causes

  • Excessive plaque
  • Brush too hard
  • Recent dental procedure
  • Tooth decay
  • Cracked tooth
  • Acidic foods
  • Whitening toothpaste
  • Gum disease

Treatment

Tooth sensitivity is extreme and persistent, but it is treatable. We do not recommend trying home remedies without consulting with your dentist first. Make sure you schedule a visit with your dentist for an evaluation. During your examination visit, the dental team will take a look at your teeth and find out what is the best way of treating it.
