Why is washing your hands necessary?

Hand washing with soap and water is the best and most effective way to eliminate germs and it protects yourself and your family from getting sick.

When should you wash your hands?

  1. After touching any surface that multiple people touch.
  2. After sneezing, coughing, or blowing your nose.
  3. After you’ve been to a crowded place or visited a patient.
  4. Before and after preparing food.
  5. Before having your meals.
  6. Before or after treating a wound or a burn.
  7. After touching an animal, animal food, or animal waste.
  8. After shaking hands with someone.
  9. After coming in contact with dirty objects.
  10. After changing diapers.
  11. After using the toilet.

Learn how to wash your hands properly.

  1. Wet your hands with clean water.
  2. Cover your hands with enough soap.
  3. Rub your hands together.
  4. Foam between your fingers, under your nails, and at the backs of your hands.
  5. Make sure to scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds.
  6. Rinse your hands under clean—preferably running—water.
  7. To finish, let your hands dry with a clean towel or by air.
