TMJ: Understanding Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment Options

What is TMJ?

Your jawbone and skull are connected by the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which resembles a hinge. The ability to chew, speak, and yawn are all made possible by this joint. Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is a condition that can result from problems with this joint. TMD can negatively affect your quality of life and create severe discomfort.

TMJ Disorder Causes
TMJ issues can arise because of several factors, such as:

  1.  Injury: The TMJ may be harmed by a head or jaw injury.
  2. Arthritis: TMJ may be impacted by rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis.
  3. Teeth grinding and clenching: TMJ strain can result from excessive teeth grinding (bruxism) or clenching.
  4. Misalignment: TMJ issues may arise from misaligned teeth or the jaw.
  5. Stress: Excessive stress can tense muscles and clench the jaw, which can aggravate TMD.

TMJ Disorder Symptoms
TMJ issues can be present with many symptoms, such as:

  1.  Jaw pain: Prolonged soreness or pain in the jaw.
  2. Headaches: Migraines or headaches that come on frequently.
  3.  Ear pain: Tinnitus, ear pain or ringing.
  4.  Difficulty chewing: Pain or discomfort when chewing
  5.  Popping sounds: When opening or closing the mouth, there are audible sounds that click or pop.
  6. Lockjaw: Having trouble fully opening or shutting the mouth.

TMJ Disorder Treatment
The severity and underlying reason determine the treatment. Treatment options include:
Self-Healing Techniques:

  1. Jaw exercises: Mild stretches
  2. Heat or cold packs: Ease discomfort and edema
  3. Modifications to diet: Soft meals to reduce Inflammation

Dental Procedures:

  1. Mouth-guards: Stop clenching and grinding.
  2.  Orthodontics: Proper alignment of the bite.

Although TMJ issues can be uncomfortable and upsetting, you can control the symptoms with the right diagnosis and care. Please contact our dental office if you’re showing any symptoms of TMD to schedule an evaluation.
